The sale, which includes small-business and consumer cards, is the latest in a string of divestitures by Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America aimed at shedding unwanted assets.

U.S. Bancorp said Wednesday Elan Financial Services, its card processing and issuing unit, acquired the portfolio from FIA Card Services, Bank of America’s credit-card unit. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed but U.S. Bancorp said accounts include those issued on behalf of 28 financial institutions, including Edward Jones & Co. that offers the cards through its more than 11,000 U.S. financial advisors.

Elan will continue marketing the cards under the name of its financial institution partners. A spokeswoman for Minneapolis-based U.S. Bancorp declined to name the other institutions.

Bank of America has been scaling back in this area in an effort to raise capital.

Regions Financial Corp. RF -0.71% in June purchased a $1 billion portfolio of credit-card loans from FIA that had been issued in Regions’ name. In August, Bank of America announced a deal to sell its $8.6 billion Canadian card portfolio to Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD, TD.T) while also saying it planned to sell its credit-card operations in the U.K. and Ireland.

That unit, MBNA Europe, was likely to draw at least four bids from potential buyers, Dow Jones Newswires reported last week.

Drilling in a six kilometer by two kilometer area on the Mt. Dempster prospect indicates an exploration potential of between 2 billion and 3 billion metric tons, the exploration company said in a statement to the Australian securities exchange.

IOH said it is preparing for a second phase of drilling in early 2012 to define the mineral resource, and will begin planning a study to determine detailed metallurgical properties of the magnetite and practical options for mining and infrastructure connections.

The company owns a portfolio of iron ore tenements and projects in the Pilbara region of Western Australia state, all located near existing and planned mines and infrastructure. It currently has an estimated mineral resource of 933.8 million tons.

At 2329 GMT, IOH’s shares were trading 0.4% higher at A$1.25 amid a decline in the broader market.

Those who hold shares through Dec. 7 will be eligible for the special dividend, which is expected to be paid on Dec. 19, the company said in a statement.

Last November Wynn Macau declared a special dividend of 76 Hong Kong cents per share, and said it would consider paying recurring dividends with a target yield of 1%-3% per year. After conducting several inspections of the nuclear plant, Dominion has “found no damage whatsoever that could preclude operation,” David Heacock, president of Dominion Nuclear, said during an appearance Friday before the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

“We have demonstrated the units are ready to restart,” Heacock said.

Before reviving the plant’s two nuclear reactors, however, Dominion needs approval from the NRC. The agency’s nuclear experts are still reviewing the plant’s readiness.

“The staff’s evaluation of whether the North Anna plant is ready, from a safety perspective, to restart remains ongoing,” NRC Chairman Greg Jaczko said.

The two reactors at the North Anna plant, located in Mineral, Va., automatically shut down following a 5.8-magnitude earthquake that was centered about 11 miles from the plant.

Managing Director Richard Goyder said in a statement he was generally pleased with the conglomerate’s retail sales results, particularly given that consumer sentiment had remained subdued throughout the three months to Sept. 25.

Wesfarmers runs Australia’s second largest supermarket chain Coles, which experienced price deflation of 1.8% during the quarter because of discounting and lower fresh produce price inflation as crops recovered from flood and cyclone damage early in the year.

Coles Managing Director Ian McLeod said the first-quarter results represented strong progress in a tough retail environment.

“Weak consumer confidence in the face of rising living costs will continue to make trading conditions challenging in the lead up to Christmas,” he said in a statement.

The Midwest power company’s shares were up 2.1% at $30.55 in recent trading, more than the broader market advance.

The quarterly dividend was increased by 1.5 cents a share to 40 cents, raising the company’s quarterly payout by an estimated $3.6 million. The stock is up 8.4% this year.

President and Chief Executive Thomas R. Voss attributed the dividend increase to steps the company has taken “over the last few years to strengthen our financial performance and position.”

The company, which operates electric and gas utilities in Missouri and Illinois as well as a merchant power business, has generally seen revenue improve after the industry suffered broadly from weak demand during the economic downturn.
