Newmont hopes to conclude the sale of the undeveloped Felton East/West and Lochbar/Bringalily South tenements in Queensland state’s Clarence-Moreton Basin within the first half of the year, the person said.

Denver, Col.-based Newmont is the world’s second-largest gold miner by output after Barrick Gold Corp. ABX +0.41% , and considers its regional coal assets in Australia to be non-core.

Newmont’s tenements in the Clarence-Moreton Basin lie around 10 kilometers from a rail line with access to Gladstone and Brisbane, and contain thermal coal that could be developed for export if capacity at either port becomes available.

The bituminous coal is low in sulfur, and has an energy content of around 6,000 kilocalories per kilogram after washing. Thermal coal is chiefly used to generate electricity.

Newmont last year appointed Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. to find a buyer for the two coal tenements.

Graceway, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September, is a specialty pharmaceutical company that makes products that treat various dermatological and women’s health conditions.

Medicis Chairman and Chief Executive Jonah Shacknai said the acquisition adds currently approved Gateway products as well as several mid- and late-stage pipeline products with combined annual net sales potential of more than $500 million.

The deal is expected to add to Medicis’ earnings next year and the company plans to update its financial guidance when the deal closes. The deal requires the approval of Medicis’s board and final approval of the bankruptcy court.

Medicis makes dermatalogical and aesthetic pharmaceutical products, including acne treatment Solodyn as well as Dysport, which competes with Allergan Inc.’s (AGN) Botox.

Last month, Graceway won permission to sell its business for $275 million cash to European pharmaceutical company Galderma SA, subject to higher bids at the auction.

Graceway, which filed for bankruptcy with a purchase offer in hand from Galderma, was founded in 2006 through the partnership of industry veteran Jefferson J. Gregory and Chicago-based private-equity firm GTCR Golder Rauner. In 2007, the company acquired 3M Pharmaceuticals for approximately $875 million. The same year Graceway merged with dermatology pharmaceutical company Chester Valley Pharmaceuticals, also partially owned by GTCR.

The Bristol, Tenn., company blamed its hardship on the emergence of a generic alternative to its top-selling Aldara genital warts cream. Aldara accounted for the majority of the company’s sales until last year, when revenue plummeted under competitive pressure from the generic. Revenue from the core product topped $320 million in 2009. In 2010, Aldara sales brought in only $52 million, court papers say.

However, American depositary shares fell 16% to $17.26 in recent after-hours trading as the company’s net loss missed analyst expectations.

The company went public in the U.S. in December, at the time posting the strongest first-day performance for a stock in the U.S. in five years. Youku, which allows users to upload video, has been sued in the past for hosting pirated items, but it now works with content owners to remove videos from its site. The company also provides licensed video content such as television shows and movies. In August, DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. DWA -1.70% struck an agreement with Youku to allow online distribution of its Kung Fu Panda film franchise, marking the first time the computer animation studio will see its films available online in China.

Youku posted a loss of 47.5 million Chinese yuan ($7.4 million), or CNY0.42 (7 cents) an ADS, compared with a year-earlier loss of CNY53.1 million, or CNY2.6 per ADS. The number of ADS in the latest period soared from the year-ago period. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected a loss of 3 cents a share. Excluding stock-based compensation and other items, the loss was CNY28.2 million ($4.4 million) compared with a year-earlier loss of CNY37.7 million.

Revenue more than doubled to CNY262.5 million, or $41.2 million, primarily due to increased average revenue per advertiser and an increased advertiser base. In August, the company predicted revenue growth of 110% to 120%.

It reported a gross profit of CNY67.8 million, compared with CNY15.8 million a year earlier. Operating expenses more than doubled.

Currency translations are based on the noon buying rate in New York as of Sept. 30, as specified by the New York Federal Reserve.

For the fourth quarter, Youku predicted revenue would increase 90% to 100% from the year-ago period.

Shares of the coal company slid 10% to $13.11 in after-hours trading.

Arch Coal now sees full-year adjusted earnings of $1 to $1.40 a share, down from the already lowered July view of $1.75 to $2.15.

On Friday, Arch Coal said the mine complex had encountered unfavorable geologic conditions and its longwall was idled for nearly 45 days following a roof fall in August. The longwall restarted late this month.

Arch Coal has reported mixed results so far this year. In the first quarter, it swung to a profit on higher selling prices, which helped lift margins. But in the second quarter, profit plunged 83% on expenses related to the acquisition of International Coal Group Inc.

The company intends to provide additional details on its operating performance and outlook in its third-quarter earnings release and conference call on Oct. 28.

“In an environment where public policy is paralyzed, all roads lead to natural gas,” Krenicki said, speaking at the start of an investor meeting hosted by GE Energy. “We see the future as gas.”

The comments by Krenicki, who serves as president of GE’s energy unit, underscore what has been increasing optimism in recent months among GE executives regarding the natural-gas sector, even though the Fairfield, Conn., conglomerate’s gas-turbine business has struggled for some time amid the economic downturn and weak U.S. sales.

Chief Executive Jeff Immelt in May forecast “a natural-gas power generation cycle” that he said GE was poised to benefit from.

Last week, GE said it had booked $1 billion in North American orders for its natural-gas-powered generators thus far this year. It said it had received “dozens” of orders for the turbine power generators, benefiting from low gas prices, stricter air-pollution regulations and a slowly recovering U.S. economy.

Meanwhile, GE Energy executives also said Tuesday that they still see strong prospects for renewable energy, despite some recent turmoil in the sector. Among the troubles, solar-manufacturing company Solyndra, which had received $528 million in loans from the federal government, recently went bankrupt.

Victor Abate, vice president of GE’s renewable energy unit, said such issues simply illustrates that “if you don’t have the right technology and the right strategy, you’re not going to be successful.”

He said GE anticipates a “multi-generational build-out” in the solar sector, adding that GE has “a differentiated position” that should enable it to prosper.

Overall, GE said it expects profit at its big energy division to decline about 4% this year, to about $7 billion. But it forecast a rebound to double-digit profit growth next year.

The division earned about $2.9 billion through the first six months of 2011, down 14% from the same period last year. GE has said a slowdown in demand for wind-energy gear hurt profits at the unit during the first half, as did the effort to integrate about $11 billion in acquisitions at the unit since late last year.

The biggest train maker by assets in China said Saturday net profit for the six months ended June 30 rose to CNY2.04 billion ($317 million) from CNY1.10 billion a year earlier, and revenue increased 42% to CNY40.12 billion.

“The revenue growth was due to strong demand for the company’s railway equipment products as China continued to rapidly expand its high-speed rail network during the reporting period,” CSR said in a statement to the Shanghai stock exchange.

The company’s financial reports show its revenue from bullet train business more than doubled to CNY10.07 billion in the first half, and its locomotive division generated revenue of CNY11 billion, up 38% from a year earlier.

Despite the surge in profit, analysts say CSR may face some uncertainties in the coming months, as the deadly train crash has raised questions over the safety of China’s high-speed railway industry.

CSR said Wednesday it would postpone a shareholders’ meeting to vote on a planned CNY11 billion private placement. The announcement came after the company’s shares had lost nearly 20% since the accident near the eastern city of Wenzhou, which killed 40 people and left nearly 200 injured.

Although the Chinese government has directed blame toward Beijing National Railway Research and Design Institute of Signal and Communication, analysts say they expect CSR and other Chinese railway equipment builders to become less aggressive in bidding for new contracts.

China started building its high-speed rail system in earnest less than a decade ago using imported technology. The country’s high-speed rail network is already the world’s largest and is planned to span around 16,000 kilometers, or about 10,000 miles, when it is completed in 2020, at an estimated total cost of more than $300 billion.

Metro Pacific said Morgan Stanley’s MS -0.24% Singapore-based investment management firm had informed the company that it had bought a total 717.11 million shares for PHP2.58 billion ($60 million) in 23 trades over the two-month period. The purchases brought Morgan Stanley Investment Management’s total shareholding in Metro Pacific to 1.44 billion shares, Metro Pacific added.

Initially focusing on cancer treatments, Merrimack is working to develop and sell “innovative medicines paired with companion diagnostics for the treatment of serious diseases,” it said. Its most advanced product candidates include an antibody designed to inhibit cancer growth, which it is developing in partnership with Sanofi (SNY, SAN.FR), and a kind of chemotherapy.

As a development-stage company, Merrimack has never been profitable and doesn’t generate any commercial revenue as of yet.

With proceeds from its IPO, it said it would fund clinical development of its most advanced product candidate and fund research of preclinical products.
