Corning’s prediction, ahead of its annual investor meeting in New York on Friday, signals confidence that it can grow its top line by selling more fiber-optic cable, smartphone cover glass and other products. Reduced demand for LCD glass — the product that represents the bulk of the company’s profit and sales — has crimped its financial performance of late.

“We now expect the telecommunications, specialty materials, environmental technologies and life sciences business segments to be the primary drivers of increased sales and profits going forward,” Chief Financial Officer Jim Flaws said in a statement.

The company said it expects LCD glass sales to be flat through 2014. Corning also reiterated its recent comments that LCD glass price declines are weighing on the company’s profitability.

Shares were up 1.5% to $13.13 in recent premarket trading.

Net profit in the three months ended Dec. 31 fell to KRW196 billion (US$175.2 million) from KRW502.5 billion a year earlier, SK Telecom said.

The result was worse than the average KRW302.8 billion net profit forecast of five analysts recently polled by Dow Jones Newswires.

Operating profit also declined, falling 35.7% to KRW329.4 billion from KRW512.2 billion while sales fell 2.3% to KRW3.930 trillion from KRW4.023 trillion.

SK Telecom cut mobile phone fees late last year at the government’s behest, as part of a broad national campaign to fight inflation.

Recently, results at Alliant–an electric and natural-gas utility centered in the upper Midwest–have been uneven results because of tepid demand for power and low gas volume. The projected expenditures include roughly $300 million of sustaining capital and $700 million of funds aimed at improving growth and productivity.

The coal and iron-ore producer’s earnings have been soaring in recent quarters as both sales volume and prices climb. Cliffs has said it is looking to consolidate its foothold in Asian markets as part of a plan to push its share of revenue from international sales above 50%.

On Thursday, Cliffs said it will spend $60 million in the U.S. to extend the life of its Empire iron ore mine to 2015, among other projects.

In eastern Canada, the company plans to spend $470 million boosting iron ore production at a major mine, with an additional $45 million earmarked for port and rail upgrades. Cliffs plans to spend $40 million on capacity expansion in Western Australia.

The company also expects to spend about $50 million on growing production of steelmaking coal from its mines in West Virginia.

Cliffs plans to start production at a chromite deposit in northern Ontario in 2015. A recent study of the area led the company to expand its output estimate to 1 million tons of chromite ore on top of the 600,000 tons of ferrochrome expected from the site.

Shares closed at $72.03 and were inactive after hours. The stock is off 18% over the past year.

“Samsung has never reviewed and never will consider plans to take over RIM,” said a Samsung Electronics spokesman.

The comment from the world’s largest technology firm by revenue came after the technology blog Boy Genius Report, which cited anonymous sources, on Tuesday said RIM and Samsung had engaged in talks and that RIM was considering selling all or part of the company to Samsung. A RIM spokeswoman declined to comment.

Olympus avoided automatic delisting from the TSE when it filed its earnings by a Dec. 14 deadline. But shares in the scandal-hit maker of cameras and endoscopes had remained under the risk of delisting as the TSE examined whether the company’s fraudulent accounting had “a material impact” on its shares.

The report comes after the Nikkei newspaper reported last week that the TSE is likely to designate Olympus’s stock as “on alert,” whereby the company must file annual progress reports on efforts to improve corporate governance and information disclosure.

The real estate investment trust’s stock declined 2.47% to $15 a share, while the overall REIT sector posted modest gains in line with the broader equities.

After a longstanding lease dispute with its former affiliate Getty Realty, Getty Petroleum Marketing filed for bankruptcy protection, listing assets and debts of between $50 million and 100 million each. The filing comes about a week after the REIT announced that it was terminating its lease agreement with Getty Petroleum and planned to repossess some 800 properties the company subleased to gas-station operators, mostly in the mid-Atlantic region. Getty Realty claims Getty Petroleum failed to make scheduled rent payments that totaled about $60 million a year.

The two companies split in 1997 but signed a long-term lease deal on the gas stations that expired in 2015. Getty Realty’s stock has dived 52% since the beginning of the year as investors fretted about the viability of Getty Petroleum’s business model given that many of the gas stations were not profitable.

Getty Petroleum said in the court filing it believed its business can be restructured to become profitable if it can resolve the lease dispute with Getty Realty.
