The heavy-machinery company said it will invest almost $300 million in its Illinois facilities in Decatur and East Peoria to further grow capacity for large mining trucks produced in Decatur. About $340 million more is planned to help make large track-type tractors in East Peoria, which are used in mining applications around the world.

“Beginning with capacity expansion plans announced in 2008, and once the plans announced today are fully in place, we will have nearly tripled our worldwide large truck capacity and doubled our large track-type tractor production capabilities in East Peoria,” Chairman and Chief Executive Doug Oberhelman said.

The company expects additional truck capacity in Decatur to be installed by 2016. The work to expand large track-type tractor production in East Peoria is expected to be completed by 2015.

The move comes a day after Caterpillar said it would also shift production of small track-type tractors and mini hydraulic excavators to a new North American facility.

The construction-equipment maker hopes to decide on that plant’s location by the end of the year, with construction starting in the first half of 2012. Once its fully operational and at capacity, the North American facility will employ more than 1,000 people.

On Friday, the company unveiled its latest shift at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit, where executives also touted expansions in Indonesia aimed at serving booming Asian markets.

A new mining truck facility in Batam, Indonesia, will make a range of mining truck chassis and bodies to be shipped to mining customers throughout the Asia Pacific region. The company plans to invest about $150 million in the new facility, which is expected to be operational in 2012 for truck bodies, with the first trucks produced in the third quarter of 2013.

Shares closed up 4.3% at $96.13 Friday and were inactive after hours. The stock is up 17% over the past year.

After conducting several inspections of the nuclear plant, Dominion has “found no damage whatsoever that could preclude operation,” David Heacock, president of Dominion Nuclear, said during an appearance Friday before the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

“We have demonstrated the units are ready to restart,” Heacock said.

Before reviving the plant’s two nuclear reactors, however, Dominion needs approval from the NRC. The agency’s nuclear experts are still reviewing the plant’s readiness.

“The staff’s evaluation of whether the North Anna plant is ready, from a safety perspective, to restart remains ongoing,” NRC Chairman Greg Jaczko said.

The two reactors at the North Anna plant, located in Mineral, Va., automatically shut down following a 5.8-magnitude earthquake that was centered about 11 miles from the plant.

Shares rose 5.6% to $30.90 on the better-than-expected results. The stock was up 43% over the past year through the close.

The maker of chips for products ranging from cell phones to computer servers has benefited from robust industrial-infrastructure spending in China, as well as design wins in the smartphone category.

Avago in June authorized up to $500 million worth of share buybacks, or 15 million shares, and raised its dividend 13% even as the stock continued to climb over the past year.

In the latest quarter, wired infrastructure sales jumped 37%, outpacing growth in other end markets.

“While uncertainties prevail in the global economy today, we continue to believe revenue will grow for the balance of the fiscal year due to share gains with certain wireless and wired OEMs,” Chief Executive Hock Tan said.

For the quarter ended July 31, the company posted a profit of $144 million, or 57 cents a share, up from $123 million, or 50 cents a share, a year earlier. Excluding write-downs, stock-based compensation and other items, per-share earnings rose to 68 cents from 61 cents. Analysts expected 63 cents.

Revenue rose 9.6% to $603 million, topping the company’s May guidance of $577.5 million to $594 million.

Gross margin widened to 49.3% from 47.8%, in line with the firm’s earlier guidance.

Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, the company forecast sequential revenue growth between 2% and 5%, which would range between $615.1 million and $633.2 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected $620 million.

Metro Pacific said Morgan Stanley’s MS -0.24% Singapore-based investment management firm had informed the company that it had bought a total 717.11 million shares for PHP2.58 billion ($60 million) in 23 trades over the two-month period. The purchases brought Morgan Stanley Investment Management’s total shareholding in Metro Pacific to 1.44 billion shares, Metro Pacific added.

The company also sees revenue rising from EUR45.8 billion last year due to increased deliveries of commercial aircraft by its Airbus division.

Chief Executive Louis Gallois told a shareholders’ meeting that Airbus expects to deliver between 520 and 530 aircraft this year, up from a record 510 in 2010, with gross order intake outstripping deliveries and adding to the company’s vast order book.

At the end of March, Airbus had an order backlog of EUR375 billion. Cash flow is expected to be positive in 2011.

Gallois said the company’s strategy in the coming years will be focused on improving the low level of profitability of the company’s civil aviation activities and strengthening its defense business. Gallois said EADS wants to be a core player in any future consolidation of the defense industry.

EADS, which is sitting on a cash pile of EUR12.2 billion, could pursue its external growth through acquisitions or partnerships, “especially in Asia, the Middle East and the Americas,” according to documents distributed to shareholders.

It is still aiming to reach a revenue balance between Airbus and its non-Airbus activities.

But that will be increasingly difficult without external growth given the budget constraints of European and U.S. governments that has put a damper on defense spending.

If the answer is ‘yes’ to both questions, that market’s worth a closer look.  But there are always exceptions.  Most investors who buy emerging market stocks don’t have a good handle on the political and economic risks of the country.  When the market starts to rise, they get excited and jump in to avoid getting left behind.  That’s why emerging markets tend to overshoot on the upside.

The best four emerging markets in terms of performance since January 2010 are Thailand, Peru, Chile and Indonesia.  Of these four economies, Peru has a ridiculously high Price/Earnings (P/E) ratio of 44.9 according to The Financial Times.  Indonesia and Chile are also fully valued at more than 20 times earnings.  Only Thailand looks reasonably valued at about 14 times earnings.  However, I’d avoid Thailand because it continues to face a lot of internal political risk.

India appears overvalued with a P/E ratio of 25.  Russia is up only 7.5% this year and trading at a P/E of only 9.3.  The Economist has Russia growing 4.0% in 2011, not bad for a country with a corrupt government and a static population.  But you’re still playing ‘Russian stock market roulette’.  I’d avoid both India and Russia for now.

My picks for top performing emerging markets in 2011 are:  China, Brazil, Turkey, Vietnam, and Chile. Comments on China and Chile follow:

China – China currently looks the most interesting (in spite of bubble predictions I some quarters) with a P/E multiple of 14.1 (historical average is 17).  The most straightforward to play China is the EFT, iShares FTSE/Xinhua (FXI), although regular followers of StocksonWallStreet will know that I often comment on individual Chinese stocks.  One word of caution on China: there’s a lot of fraud in the small-cap sector.  You can buy a portfolio of companies and hope not more than 25-30% of them are fraudulent.  You should still make enough on the winners to cover your losers.

Chile – Yes, its lofty P/E of 23 is expensive, and its stock market is up 41% in 2010.  However, the country is just emerging from recession and it has an excellent government with policies that appear likely to drive growth.  Sometimes – not often – high valuations are justified.  I believe Chile may be one such example.  The easiest way to buy Chile is the EFT, iShares MSCI Chile Investable Market Index Fund (ECH).  Individual stocks worth a look:  Vina Concha y Toro SA (VCO), a premium wine exporter, with a 4% dividend.
