Auto makers on Friday are expected to post sales of 1.24 million cars and trucks for March, a 16.5% jump from a year ago and a 25.1% increase from February, according to Edmunds.com.

The gains will come against a backdrop of sky-high gas prices, war in the Middle East, and, of course, supply-chain problems stemming from the catastrophe in Japan, which analysts say won’t be fully felt until April.

J.D. Power and Associates analyst Jeff Schuster said that retail sales have been just as strong as initially expected, even with rising gas prices and dropping inventories.

“In fact, retail sales in March may be benefitting from the uncertainty around inventory levels, as consumers flock to dealerships to secure their choice of vehicle as availability decreases,” he said.

As for March, Ford (F 14.89, +0.03, +0.20%) , specifically, could see a 15% improvement to place it ahead of its crosstown rival GM (GM 31.55, +0.01, +0.03%)  on a monthly basis for only the second time in 13 years.

“GM seems to have pulled back on incentives in March and could suffer a sales hangover through the next few months, given that the company’s earlier offers have been quite generous and may have pulled ahead future sales,” Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Jessica Caldwell said.

Overall, incentive spending for the industry is expected to have dropped by more than 13%, which would bring it to its lowest level since 2007, TrueCar.com reported.

Barclays Capital analyst Brian Johnson said that periodic disruptions could hinder production and inventories in the near term, but his long-term view on the industry hasn’t been impacted.

He said the manufacturers may continue to rein in the promotions and raise prices in order to deal with a lack of supply.

“Auto makers may reduce incentives in April in order to conserve new vehicle inventory,” he said. “Stronger pricing could help offset additional costs OEMs may incur as a result of production disruptions.”

Toyota (TM 80.91, -0.06, -0.07%)  is the only major auto maker in store for a drop, according to Johnson, who is looking for a 6% decline mainly due to the generous incentives offered back in March 2010.

Both Honda Motor Co. (HMC 38.11, +0.73, +1.95%)  and Nissan Motors (NSANY 17.82, +0.68, +3.97%)  are likely headed for double-digit improvements.

If the answer is ‘yes’ to both questions, that market’s worth a closer look.  But there are always exceptions.  Most investors who buy emerging market stocks don’t have a good handle on the political and economic risks of the country.  When the market starts to rise, they get excited and jump in to avoid getting left behind.  That’s why emerging markets tend to overshoot on the upside.

The best four emerging markets in terms of performance since January 2010 are Thailand, Peru, Chile and Indonesia.  Of these four economies, Peru has a ridiculously high Price/Earnings (P/E) ratio of 44.9 according to The Financial Times.  Indonesia and Chile are also fully valued at more than 20 times earnings.  Only Thailand looks reasonably valued at about 14 times earnings.  However, I’d avoid Thailand because it continues to face a lot of internal political risk.

India appears overvalued with a P/E ratio of 25.  Russia is up only 7.5% this year and trading at a P/E of only 9.3.  The Economist has Russia growing 4.0% in 2011, not bad for a country with a corrupt government and a static population.  But you’re still playing ‘Russian stock market roulette’.  I’d avoid both India and Russia for now.

My picks for top performing emerging markets in 2011 are:  China, Brazil, Turkey, Vietnam, and Chile. Comments on China and Chile follow:

China – China currently looks the most interesting (in spite of bubble predictions I some quarters) with a P/E multiple of 14.1 (historical average is 17).  The most straightforward to play China is the EFT, iShares FTSE/Xinhua (FXI), although regular followers of StocksonWallStreet will know that I often comment on individual Chinese stocks.  One word of caution on China: there’s a lot of fraud in the small-cap sector.  You can buy a portfolio of companies and hope not more than 25-30% of them are fraudulent.  You should still make enough on the winners to cover your losers.

Chile – Yes, its lofty P/E of 23 is expensive, and its stock market is up 41% in 2010.  However, the country is just emerging from recession and it has an excellent government with policies that appear likely to drive growth.  Sometimes – not often – high valuations are justified.  I believe Chile may be one such example.  The easiest way to buy Chile is the EFT, iShares MSCI Chile Investable Market Index Fund (ECH).  Individual stocks worth a look:  Vina Concha y Toro SA (VCO), a premium wine exporter, with a 4% dividend.

Top Oil Stocks

ExxonMobil (XOM) - Expect XOM to see lots of new business in the coming year. I think this is a good long-term anchor to any portfolio.

Chevron (CVX) - Good overall play as they have very low exposure to refining while holding a stellar exploration portfolio. With rising oil prices this stock is a no brainer. Chevron also posses a solid 4% dividend yield and is currently trading at around eight times earnings.

ConocoPhillips (COP) – Holds a strong array of natural gas positions which could be the future of energy after the recent series of events. Adding to this they are strong globally and posses many valuable assets that will strengthen the companies prospects.

PetroBras (PBR) – Love this stock however it has been the worst performing stock in Brail throughout the first half of the year due to capital problems and the BP Oil Spill. I feel this overhang has kept the stock low which presents a great buying opportunity as PBR continues to be under-valued when matched up against it’s peers. My gut feeling is once these few issues are washed away this stock will rise.

Suncor (SU) - Refineries and Oil Drillers such as Suncor should succeed as many have been hit hard this year unfairly due to the BP crisis. I think this stock will be trading at around $40 a year from now supported by a solid dividend makes it an attractive investment.

World food prices will rise this decade, boosted by a growing population and changing diets, the OECD and the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization said in their annual outlook report.

“Real prices of all products other than pig meat are expected to be above their average 1997-2006 level,” according to the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the Rome-based FAO.

Growing demand from emerging markets and for bio-fuel production will send prices soaring, according to the OECD and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

Food prices are set to rise as much as 40% over the coming decade amid growing demand from emerging markets and for bio-fuel production, according to a recent United Nations report which warns of rising hunger and food insecurity.
